Elizabeth & Mary was a pleasant surprise – I not only read this book cover to cover but really enjoyed it. I write this as someone for whom history has been interesting but rarely captivating.
Jane Dunn does a wonderful job of describing these two queens and their lives. The intrigues of court life and the constant turbulence caused by everything from religious differences to avarice and ambition meant that both queens rarely suffered a dull moment (although Marys house arrest must have been very frustrating to a woman who so clearly enjoyed adventure).
The book focuses entirely on the relationship and bonds (or lack of them) that existed between the two queens. I definitely recommend it to those like me who can find history plagued with dates and details difficult to read for pleasure.
